So glad Sakic came out with this. Hopefully that will keep all of the cork soakers out of here. There was no way Barrie was going to get traded. Avs need him too much right now. 4.5-5 mil a year and the longer the term the better for us. |

I mean, that statement doesnt really change anything. Basically he hasnt been getting offered what he wants in a trade and is messaging that to other GM's. Talking about arbitration clears that up for me.
If they really wanted to keep him they would have already locked him up to a deal at $6M AAV for 5 or so years. Several other teams would gladly pay him that and he would probably get closer to $7M on the open market (not that he's necessarily worth that). |

Thats such a flawed logic....if they wanted him they would have signed him by now.
You can apply that to any big name RFA dman then, Vatanen, Jones, Ristolainen, Lindholm, Trouba, Dumba.
Those teams must not wnat them bc they arent signed yet. Or that like every year, RFA and their agents wait till the market starts to establish themselves, trying to avoid being the first to resign leaving money on the table. On top of that, the Cap has yet to be officially announced yet, so no RFA is going to be signing until then. So just bc he is still unsigned doesnt mean the Avs are trying to trade him |

“I’d like to do a long-term deal with Tyson," Sakic told the Denver Post. "If that doesn’t work out, it’s expected he’ll go to arbitration. Either way, he’ll be here.”
I took this as whether the Avs sign Barrie long term or take him to arbitration... he'll be here.. in those two scenarios.
Once again, it comes down to the what the Avs view him as: is he a specialty d-man or a top-4? Just like with RoR when many argued whether he was a 2nd line or top 3rd-line center. And after looking back at last year's quotes, I can't help but feel it sounds pretty similar to Sakic talking a couple of weeks before last year's draft:
In a conference call with reporters Thursday, Sakic said he's not out to trade his star center.
He praised O'Reilly, saying: "I like Ryan a lot. He is a very valuable player. He's part of our core and yeah, my first priority would be to sign him. Obviously, we'll see where it all goes."
That being said I still see a trade being a longshot until/unless we find someone comparable to take that RD spot. The Avs will sign Barrie long term or everyone goes to arbitration and we talk about this next year. |

The difference in those situations is that ROR was 1 year out to being a UFA, Barrie is a RFA and 3 years out to UFA. So in my mind, you really cant compare what sakic said abotu the 2, they are different situations.
Avs have options with Barrie, the really had limited time and options in what to do with ROR |

The difference might be 3 years to 1 on UFA, but the similarity in those two situations is that they are/were both players where money asked for AND role were different from what the player and team wanted. And in both statements Sakic talked about how he liked the players and wanted to keep them.
Of course they have options with Barrie now, that was my point. They had options with RoR too. But they had limited time because they tried to make things work until he was at the end of his RFA and they HAD to choose.

I dont really believe that money issue with Barrie is as significant and crazy as it was with ROR. I am way more optimistic with Barrie working out as I dont think he wants out of Denver like ROR did. But thats just me with rose coloured glasses on looking at the situation |

RoR wanted big money. And that's okay he just wasn't going to get it here. And like you said he had one year left till UFA. SI he got traded. And we got pretty good for his value. Barrie I think wants to stay here, so I'm hoping they do get a the long term deal done but we have 3 years to work with. Then see how it pans out. But the core will be together for at least 2 years yet tI'll dutchy contract comes up then probably barries as well. Would like mack to get a long term deal done. I feel like a bridge deal would cause us to pick between mack and Dutch in two or so years when they both will get raises. Though if they ended up getting another long term deal at 7m each I would be okay with that

I'd like to see what Sakic has up his sleeve.
Can Barrie get done for at/under 5.5
Does MacK get done for at/under 6.0
Can they move Mitchell, Holden, McLeod or Iggy? (Yes, Yes, no and no)
Safe to assume they need a top-6 F and a top-4 D?
Their cap isnt going to work (and can we just admit Duchene should be on the W?):
okposo 5.5 MacK 6 Duchene 6
Landy 5.571 Soderberg 4.75 Rantanen 0.925
Iginla 5.333 Grigo 1.5 Comeau 2.4
Compher 0.875 Mitchell 1.8 Skille 0.9
EJ 6 Demers 4.5
Barrie 5.5 Bigras 0.843333
Beauch 4.5 Zads 0.894
Gelinas 1.575
Holden 1.65 McLeod 1.333
Varly 5.9
Pick 1.25
F Total 41.554
D Total 26.795333

Personalyl I jst don't see them adding much in UFA (based on what Sakic had to say too). With the expansion draft, if they sign Demers or Okopso, they probably will want NMCs so they aren't exposed to Vegas. Avs can't afford to give those out since they will probably have to go with the 8 skaters route of protection (Landy, mack, Dutch, Grigo or Soderberg, EJ, Beauch, Barrie, Zads)
I think they try to resign Matthias and try and find a 3rd pairing right hand shot (maybe luke schenn) for subtle upgrades.
Landy MacK Rantanen
Grigo Dutch Comeau
Matthias Soderberg Iggy
McLeod Compher Mitchell Martinsen
EJ Zads
Beauch Barrie
Bigras Schenn
Holden Gelinas
I really think thats the safe roster bet if they don't start to trade some guys away (as you mentioned) |

There have been so many changes since Roy and Sakic took over, I think they want to avoid any big changes to see if they like the core of the team. The last 2 years they've spent 20+ games trying to figure out their new identity without Stastny and then ROR.
If things still aren't working they can change up the core next year. If they think they're close, they have all that sweet sweet cap space for next year. |

Its just not the time to doing radical surgery on the roster with the expansion draft in play. So what if they moved a Fwd for a Dman, then they automatically are protecting Beuch, EJ, and then have to protect traded Dman, barrie, and Zads.
The Big move I see them trying to do is sign Radulov, if they can't do that, then they are adding Matthias, moving mitchell and holden out for cap relief, adding depth guys.
The roster is decent as is, 4th line upgrade and a bottom pairing Dman (that isn't an AHL dman). Bigras and Zads are going to be better and better in time, so don't have to crazy over paying for UFA or trade DMan this year.
Roll the dice with Roy under his last year of coaching contract and see if this Team can pull it togoether (as long as Roy is implementing changes himself). If He does, I think this team doesnt need to do anything crazy to make the playoffs |
